Rethinking the Role of the Juvenile Justice System: Improving Youth’s School Attendance and Educational Outcomes
Hosted by The Council of State Governments (CSG) Justice Center
Jurisdictions around the country are beginning a uniquely challenging school year and reconsidering how they will deal with issues related to student absences and behavior. This webinar presents findings from an unprecedented study conducted by the CSG Justice Center on the impact of juvenile justice system supervision on youth’s school attendance. The study raises important questions and concerns about the traditional roles and responsibilities that juvenile justice systems nationwide have taken on in promoting school engagement and success.
The webinar highlights key findings from the study and identifies important implications for juvenile justice and school policy and practice as well as potential alternative approaches. Study findings are discussed within the broader context of improving the “front end” of the juvenile justice system, including arrest and diversion.
